Chain fusion and orientational ordering in monomolecular layers of amphiphilic molecules
نویسنده
چکیده
A model which describes the competition between chain melting and orientational ordering in a monomolecular layer of long-chain amphiphilic molecules is studied. This model is analogous to the Berker-Cardy-Nelson-Scalapino model for phase transitions in films of 'HeHe mixtures. Their Midgal-Kadanoff renormalization-group approach is applied to the present problem. It reveals two phase transitions. A first-order one, associated with the melting of hydrophobic chains and a Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition linked to the existence of topological orientational order of the chains in the high-molecular-area region. Isotherms and coexistence curves in the region of the liquid-expanded liquid-condensed transition are calculated. The disagreement with experimental results suggests that the model does not adequately describe the phase transition. This is in contradiction with a previous suggestion based on mean-field considerations.

Nonequilibrium pattern formation in chiral Langmuir monolayers with transmembrane flows
Studies of pattern formation in nonequilibrium soft matter are essential for understanding the operation of biological cells and for potential applications [1]. Biological membranes including active molecular pumps or channels can develop shape oscillations and show persistent wave propagation [2, 3]. If a membrane contains rotating molecular motors, interactions between them may lead to the de...
متن کاملonequilibrium self-organization phenomena in active Langmuir onolayers
Langmuir monomolecular layers, formed by amphiphilic molecules at liquid-air interfaces and containing a fraction of chiral molecules, are theoretically investigated. These monolayers can be brought out of thermal equilibrium by applying a gradient of small molecules across the interface, resulting in the leakage flow. We show that, when splay coupling between the orientation field and the loca...
متن کاملN NQR and Orientational Ordering in Smectic Liquid Crystals
Liquid crystals are systems which flow like liquids while retaining the mechanical and optical anisotropy of crystals. On a microscopic level they are characterized by molecular orientational order accompanied by a partial or complete translational disorder of the molecular positions (1~3) • Thermotropic liquid crystals are formed upon heating many anisotropic organic compounds, while lyotropic...
متن کاملAntiferroelectric ordering of amphiphilic glycolipids in bent-core liquid crystals.
Lipids are the main constituents of biological cell membranes, and their liquid crystalline properties play a crucial role in cell functions. We have discovered that dodecyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside glycolipid layers can be electrically polarized in supramolecular structures of glycolipid and bent-core ("banana-shape") molecules. Interestingly the glycolipid molecules, known to be excellent chira...
متن کاملTracer diffusion inside fibrinogen layers.
We investigate the obstructed motion of tracer (test) particles in crowded environments by carrying simulations of two-dimensional Gaussian random walk in model fibrinogen monolayers of different orientational ordering. The fibrinogen molecules are significantly anisotropic and therefore they can form structures where orientational ordering, similar to the one observed in nematic liquid crystal...
